What is Lakeshore Civitan?
International History.
Civitan International is a worldwide organization founded over 100 years ago to help mentally challenged children of that era. It offers the Civitan members and clubs the opportunity to voluntarily support good programs and “to make this world and country a better place in which to live”. Lakeshore Civitan is Montreal West Island’s local Civitan Club. For more information please go to www.civitan.org
Annual Fundraising.
Over the years, the Lakeshore Civitan Club has raised over $1,000,000 through its annual sales of Claxton Christmas Fruit Cakes, golf tournaments and garage sales. The funds provide support to various Montreal West Island groups, including: Quebec Special Olympics, WIAIH (West Island Association for Intellectually Handicapped), West Island Citizen Advocacy, Generations Foundation, AVATIL (Training for Independent Living), Lucky Harvest, Light a Dream, as well has our annual distribution of Easter Food Baskets to the underprivileged in the West Island. We also donated IGA food vouchers to victims of the 2017 Quebec floods.
Community Projects.
Lakeshore Civitan Club, a non-profit community organization, was chartered on December 2, 1955. The John F. Kennedy School in Pointe Claire was founded by Lakeshore Civitan in 1958, and in 1968 Lakeshore Civitan donated the building at 111 Donagani in Pointe Claire to WIAIH (West Island Association for Intellectually Handicapped). A Hoyer Lift was donated to the West Island Palliative Care Center in 2002.
Volunteer Driven.
Members of Lakeshore Civitan volunteer their time to help out such organizations such as the Foundation of Stars, Quebec Special Olympics and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. They also play Bingo once a month with the residents of a group home for intellectually handicapped in Pointe Claire.
